Hello and welcome to my pages about Crete.

My name is Ray and I live near to the city of Hania in western Crete. I have been in and out of Crete since 1966 and these pages include my memories from that time. Later, from 1968 to 1975 I worked in Iraklion.

There have been many visits since, but now my wife and I have built a house here where we live permanently and have done so since 2004.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy these pages and I do encourage you leave comments as well as ask questions about this extraordinarily beautiful island.

Thank you for looking,

  1. Dear Ray hello,

I’m producing a documentary about Cretan music for the ABC in Australia and looking to get in touch with John Sooklaris. Do you possibly have a contact? If you can send me an email, I can also let you know when the film is finished, if you are interested.

    Many thanks,
    Rea Apostolides

  2. Hi Ray, i lived on Crete in 1992-1993. I managed a youth hostel. Locals called me Siphi. i was wondering if you knew what the word means. I was called “Siphi” or “Siphachi”, or “little Siphi”. I was told it translated into Joseph as Siphalion, but I can’t find anything about that. Living in Sitia was one of the best times of my life. I visited Hania and many other places, but I lived in a little village outside of Sitia called Kato Episkopi in an old two-room house.

  3. Hello Ray. I notice you live in Crete. Thanks for comment on my blog. From one of your posts I notice you mention the Linear B clay tablets found by Arthur Evans. Well I have been studying those very tablets for a while and am now at my University level so can read them quite well. Michael Ventris was brilliant. Such a pity he died so young. I and my partner have lived in Crete for almost 13 years now. We are East Crete.
