My Little Cretan Owl

ABC Wednesday

Owls are lovely creatures. They fly at night and eat up rats and mice. You hardly see them in Crete although they can be heard hooting from time to time. But recently I met a baby owl near the road. Here he is:

I snapped this picture fast, almost before he knew I was there. Then I moved in a bit to get a close up and the baby owl went into full defence mode. It is truly something to see:

He was saying to me, in Greek naturally, come no closer.

I was worried that he had been left alone so I looked to the trees above, and sure enough, his mother was there watching over him.

  1. I’m so glad the owl spoke ‘Crete’. Otherwise you might have tried to cuddle him. May I say that I think the statue in your previous blog is one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen. I love the idea that there may be more, forgotten, names to record.

  2. So beautiful bird! Do you know that people in Greece say that if an owl sit on a house someone will die from this house? Don’t worry, it’s just a superstition!!!

  3. Thanks for your visit. and your kind comment.
The feathers of this owl are beautiful: they look like snow…
I had never seen an owl opening wide its wings !Amazing shot!
    Miss Yves !

  4. Hello Ray

Thanks for visiting my Blog – I’ve added Sherete to my list of welcomes..

I love owls – when we went to the Yorkshire Dales a few years ago ( virtually every weekend ) we would see and hear them every night – usually Tawny Owls but we have seen Barn and Long Eared Owl. Happy days !

  5. So, so cute. I love owls. I’ve just finished reading Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals, relating his adventures on Corfu. He had quite a menagerie, and one member was an owl.
